Schema markup (structured data) helps search engines and AI systems understand who you are and what a page is about. The most useful types for businesses are Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQPage, Article with an author (Person) and BreadcrumbList. It must match visible content. Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews, so treat schema as clarity, not a shortcut.
Some agencies sell schema as a secret weapon for AI search. It is not secret and it is not a shortcut, but it is useful: it states facts in a format machines read reliably, which reduces guesswork about your business.
Here is what to add, what to avoid and what to expect.
Schema types for a business website
Which schema types matter most?
- Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage or about page: name, logo, URL, contact details, address or service area, and sameAs links to your official profiles. This anchors your business as an entity.
- Service on each service page: the service name, description, area served and your business as the provider.
- Article with author on guides: a named Person with a job title and profile helps show expertise.
- FAQPage where a page genuinely shows questions and answers. Google limits FAQ rich results to certain sites, but the markup still describes the content clearly.
- Product for e-commerce, with price, availability and reviews that match the page.
- BreadcrumbList to show site structure.
What does Google say about schema and AI?
Google’s guidance on AI features says there is no special schema needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that structured data should match the visible content of the page. In other words: schema supports good content; it cannot replace it.
What are common schema mistakes?
- Marking up content that is not visible on the page, such as hidden FAQs or reviews.
- Self-written “reviews” or ratings in markup.
- Conflicting details, such as a different phone number in schema than on the page.
- Duplicate, competing Organization blocks from several plugins.
- Copy-pasted LocalBusiness markup on every page with the wrong address.
How do you check your schema?
Use Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, and check the Enhancements reports in Search Console. Re-test after theme or plugin updates, which can change or duplicate markup.
How does schema fit into GEO?
Schema is one of several clarity signals, alongside answer-first content, consistent business information and third-party mentions. Read what GEO and AEO are and how to get recommended by AI assistants, or let our AI search optimization team audit and fix your structured data.
