Wireframe vs mockup vs prototype

Last updated: October 5, 2026 · 3 min read · By Ali Raza

Quick answer

A wireframe is a simple layout showing structure and content without visual design. A mockup is a static, full-colour picture of how the screen will look. A prototype is clickable, so people can try the flow as if it were real. Use wireframes to agree structure cheaply, mockups to agree the look, and prototypes to test with users and show stakeholders or investors before development starts.

Founders and business owners are often asked whether they want wireframes, mockups or a prototype, without a clear explanation of the difference. Each has a job, and skipping the wrong one can be costly.

What is a wireframe for?

Wireframes answer “what goes where?” They show which information and actions appear on each screen and in what order, without the distraction of colour and imagery. Because they are quick to change, they are the cheapest place to fix structural problems.

What is a mockup for?

Mockups answer “what will it look like?” They apply your brand, typography, colours and imagery to the wireframe structure. Stakeholders can judge the visual direction, and developers can see exact styles.

What is a prototype for?

Prototypes answer “does it work for users?” Linking screens together lets people click through a task, so you can watch where they hesitate. Prototypes are also powerful for investor pitches and for getting sign-off before development.

Which ones do you need?

Typical project path

What are you building?
Simple marketing website↓Wireframes for key pages, then mockups
New app or MVP↓Wireframes, then a clickable prototype to test
Redesign of a complex product↓Audit, wireframes, prototype, then full UI

Can you skip straight to a prototype?

For small changes, yes. For new products, skipping wireframes usually means debating colours before the structure is right, which wastes time. For MVPs, a clickable prototype is one of the best ways to validate an idea before writing code; see our guide to validating a SaaS idea.

What tools are used?

Figma is the most common tool for all three, which makes moving from wireframe to mockup to prototype smooth. What matters more than the tool is testing with real users at each stage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a wireframe and a prototype?

A wireframe is a static layout of structure and content. A prototype is clickable, so users can try the flow and you can test it.

Do I need a prototype for my app?

For a new app or MVP, a clickable prototype is very useful for user testing, investor demos and sign-off before development.

Is a mockup the same as a design?

A mockup is the static visual design of a screen. A complete design project also includes flows, states, a prototype and components.

What tool is used for wireframes and prototypes?

Figma is the most common, letting teams move from wireframes to mockups to prototypes in one place.
