Generative engine optimization (GEO) is making your business easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features to find, understand, trust and cite. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on giving clear, direct answers that these systems can quote. Both build on SEO: AI search still depends on pages it can crawl and index, then favours sources with clear facts, strong evidence and consistent mentions across the web.
Search is changing shape. Instead of ten blue links, buyers increasingly see an AI-written answer, or ask an assistant directly and get a short list of recommended providers with a few citations.
This guide explains how that process works and what you can do to be part of the answer.
SEO, AEO and GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aims to | Rank pages in search | Be the direct answer | Be named and cited by AI |
| Focus | Keywords, links, technical health | Questions and concise answers | Entities, facts, trust and mentions |
| Where it shows | Search results | Featured snippets, voice, AI answers | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
How does AI search decide what to say?
When an assistant needs current information, it searches the web or its own index, retrieves relevant pages, reads them and writes an answer, often citing a few sources. To be included, your content must be reachable by the crawler, relevant to the question, clear enough to extract facts from, and trustworthy compared with other sources.
What does Google say?
Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema or “AI text files” needed. The same SEO best practices apply: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important content in text, provide a good page experience and make sure structured data matches visible content.
What helps businesses appear in AI answers?
- Crawlable, indexed pages in both Google and Bing, without accidental blocks on AI search crawlers. See our AI crawlers guide.
- Clear entity facts: who you are, what you do, where, for whom, since when, stated plainly and consistently.
- One page per service and location, each answering real customer questions directly.
- Answer-first writing: a short, specific answer at the top of each section, then detail.
- Evidence: case studies, numbers, credentials, named authors and sources.
- Structured data that matches the page. See our schema guide.
- Third-party mentions: reviews, directories, industry sites, partners and press.
What does not work?
Keyword-stuffed pages, mass-produced thin content, fake reviews and hidden text aimed at AI systems. These risk penalties in search and do not build the trust signals AI systems look for.
How do you know if it is working?
Track a fixed set of customer questions across assistants each month, note mentions and citations, and watch AI referral traffic in analytics. Our guide to measuring AI search visibility explains how. For a step-by-step plan, read how to get recommended by AI assistants, or start with a free check from our AI search optimization service.
Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for in marketing?
Generative engine optimization: making a business easy for generative AI systems to find, understand, trust and cite in their answers.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI search depends on crawlable, indexed, trustworthy content, so SEO is the foundation. GEO adds emphasis on clear facts, entities and third-party mentions.
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practices.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
It varies. Technical fixes can help quickly once pages are recrawled; building trust and third-party mentions takes months.
