Measure AI search visibility in three ways: question tracking (ask a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month and record whether you are mentioned, cited and how you are described), AI referral traffic in GA4 from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai and gemini.google.com, and search data from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Look at trends over months, not single answers.
AI answers change from one conversation to the next, which makes visibility harder to measure than a ranking position. But you can still track it reliably enough to make decisions.
This is the method we use for clients.
Three ways to measure AI visibility
1. Build a question set
List 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask, across three types:
- Recommendation: “Best custom CRM developers for contractors in Canada?”
- Comparison: “Shopify vs WooCommerce for a small art gallery?”
- Brand: “What does Upstack Web do?” “Is [your brand] reliable?”
Include your services, locations and audiences. Keep the list fixed so month-to-month results are comparable.
2. Track answers each month
For each question and assistant, record:
- Are you mentioned? In what position?
- Is your website cited or linked?
- Is the description accurate?
- Which competitors and sources appear instead?
Use a clean session without personal history, and run important questions more than once because answers vary. Dedicated AI visibility tools can automate this at larger scale.
3. Measure AI referral traffic
In GA4, create an exploration or segment for sessions whose source includes chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Track sessions, key events and leads from these sources over time. Not all AI-influenced visits are labelled (some arrive as direct traffic), so treat this as a minimum.
4. Use search console data
Google’s AI features are reported within Search Console’s overall search performance. Watch impressions and clicks for the pages AI assistants cite, and use Bing Webmaster Tools, since Bing’s index matters for several assistants.
5. Ask new leads
Add “How did you hear about us?” with an “AI assistant (ChatGPT, etc.)” option to your forms and sales calls. It is simple and often the clearest signal.
What should you do with the results?
- If you are not mentioned at all, check crawlability and entity clarity first. See our AI crawlers guide.
- If competitors are cited from third-party lists, work on getting into those sources.
- If descriptions are wrong, fix inconsistent information across your site and listings.
- If you are cited for some questions but not others, create or improve pages answering the missing ones.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask a fixed set of buyer questions in clean sessions each month and record mentions, citations and descriptions, or use an AI visibility tracking tool.
Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?
Yes, partly. Visits that arrive from chatgpt.com show as referral traffic; some AI-influenced visits arrive as direct traffic and are not labelled.
Why do AI answers about my business change?
AI answers vary between sessions and over time as models and sources change, so track trends across many questions rather than single answers.
What is a good way to start measuring AI visibility?
Pick 20 to 50 buyer questions, check them monthly across the major assistants, track AI referral traffic in GA4 and ask new leads how they found you.
